Make a splash

¡Hola!

Cuando digo que esto del scrapbooking es realmente adictivo, lo digo en serio, o a lo mejor es que mi personalidad es así. Hace varios días que no trabajo en ningún proyecto, y aunque no es que haya estado de brazos cruzados, tenía ganas de ponerme a recortar y pegar. Además, gracias al blog Scrapeando con Rocío, sabía que hay algunos retos todavía vivos este mes, y me apetecía ver si podía hacer algo digno de participar. 

En concreto, me refiero a dos retos: el primero, del blog Fiebre de Scrapbook, que consiste en crear un layout siguiendo el sketch a continuación:  

Y el segundo, de El mundo de Lolita, que consiste en componer un layout con esta paleta de colores:

 

Sin más dilación, esta es mi aportación a los retos: 

Como veis, se trata de un layout superveraniego en el que hay dos niños saltando a una piscina y a punto de hacer un gran salpicón, como sugiere el título "Make a splash". Para el fondo, he utilizado una hoja de Bella!, Floral, que es una pared de ladrillo blanca estupenda para salpicar con tinta Distress Ink en los colores Evergreen Bough y Picked Raspberry. El papel turquesa es de Bazzil, y el de la esquina superior derecha también es de Bella, I Do. 

En esta foto se pueden apreciar las diferentes capas de la composición. Las fotos están montadas sobre el papel I Do de Bella!. Los círculos están cortados a mano y decorados con lentejuelas en fucsia. El letrero, Make a splash, está imprimido sobre cartulina blanca, envejecida con Distress Ink en Evergreen Bough. Os enseño el detalle de los círculos en la siguiente fotografía. 

El año, 2017, está hecho con sellos. La tinta es Archival Ink de Ranger, en el tono Watering Can. 

Esta frase me encanta, y creo que va muy bien con el espíritu de las fotografías. Las letras son de Dovecraft y la tinta, de nuevo Watering Can de Archival Ink. En la foto también se aprecian los salpicones de los dos colores de tinta. 

Por último, el detalle de la esquina superior izquierda. Me pareció un poco soso simplemente con la superposición de papeles, así que después de sopesar varias opciones, decidí adornarlos con botones de Teresa Collins y cordel naranja y blanco. 

Me lo he pasado genial haciéndolo y creo que el resultado final es bastante chulo.

Globetrotter

Tengo una prima viajera, y decidí hacerle un layout como regalo sorpresa. Además, he decidido atreverme y participar en el reto de julio de In the Scrap. Esta es mi primera participación en retos de scrapbooking, así que confieso que estoy un poco nerviosa de presentar mi trabajo a un panel de juezas tan habilidosas, creativas y expertas en la materia. 

I have a cousin who loves travelling, so I decided to make her a layout as a surprise gift. On top of this, I'm taking part in the In the Scrap July challenge. It's my first time in such scrapbooking challenges, so I must say I feel a bit anxious to show my project to a panel of such expert, skillful and creative judges.

He utilizado el diseño "extra" de la colección Nyhavn de Maja Design, que es un mapa del mundo antiguo, en blanco y negro, pero con unas florecitas de colores suaves. Me pareció superbonito, y completamente ideal para mi prima trotamundos. Las fotos que utilicé estan hechas en varios confines del mundo, y llenas de colorido y de sonrisas. Ya que el fondo era tan monocromático, decidí aprovechar el colorido de las fotos y añadir accesorios de tonos vibrantes. Dispuse las fotografías en círculo, y después de sopesar si cinco fotos eran demasiadas... decidí que no, que saldría bien si las recortaba un poco. 

I've used the bonus design in the Maja Design Nyhavn collection, which shows an antique world map in black and white, with some soft coloured flowers in the corners. I thought it was really pretty, and totally suited for my globetrotting cousin. The pictures I used were taken in different spots of the planet, and they're full of colour and smiles. Since the background was monochrome, I took advantage of the colours in the photos and accessorised using vibrant shades. I arranged the pictures in a circle, and pondered whether five pictures were too many... I decided it wasn't, it would be OK after trimming them a little bit and wouldn't clutter the design.

He pegado las fotos a unos recortes de papel de las colecciones Enjoying Outdoors and Nyhavn. He puesto algunos sellos utilizando tinta Archival Ink en el tono Watering Can (me encanta, no es tan intenso como el negro pero es intenso). Las flores son Paper Blossoms de Simply Creative, Dixi Crafts y Paper Blooms de Kaisercraft. Hay algunos puntitos perlados de Liquid Pearls y una bicicleta metálica. Los carteles 'Globe' y 'trotter' están imprimidos sobre cartulina blanca y envejecidos con Distress Ink en Vintage Photo.

I glued the pictures to cutouts from the Enjoying Outdoors and Nyhavn collections. I stamped on the background paper using Archival Ink in Watering Can (I love that colour, it's not as deep as black, but it's dark). The flowers are Simply Creative Paper Blossoms, Dixi Crafts and Kaisercraft Paper Blooms. There are some dots of Liquid Pearls and a little metal bike. The signs 'Globe' and 'trotter' were printed on white cardstock, which was then aged using Distress Ink in Vintage Photo.

El globo aerostático y el sol son dos de los sellos que puse por el fondo. He añadido algunas lentejuelas para darle un toque más glamuroso e interesante. 

The hot-air balloon and the sun are two of the stamps used on the background. I added some sequins to make it look a bit more glam and interesting.

Me inspiré en los vivos colores de las fotografías para adornar el LO. Creo que los naranjas y amarillos le dan un aire fresco a la composición. 

I was inspired by the vibrant colous in the pictures to decorate the layout. I think the orange and yellow hues make the composition look fresh.

Me siento bastante contenta con este trabajo. No creo que sea de premio, pero he disfrutado mucho haciéndolo y su nueva dueña está encantada con él, y en el fondo, esto es lo que cuenta, ¿no? 

I'm fairly pleased with this project. I don't think it'll win any prizes, but I've had a really good time making it and its new owner is delighted with it, and in the end, this is what counts, isn't it?

Strolling hand in hand

Con el calor, no siempre apetece salir de casa, y hace unos días hacía demasiado calor como para aventurarse fuera con dos niños pequeños a cuestas. Así que, aprovechando que los peques estaban ocupados viendo una peli, saqué el material de scrapbooking y me puse manos a la obra.

When it's really hot you don't always feel like leaving the house, and some days ago, it was too hot to venture outside with two small children in tow. So, seeing as they were too busy watching a film, I took my scrapbooking kit out and rolled up my sleeves.

Unos días antes me había pasado por Scrapbookpasion y me había comprado varias cositas que tenía ganas de probar. Aparte de eso, había visto varios vídeotutoriales del canal de YouTube de Scrapeando con Rocío, y mi amiga Antonia, de Cáscara de Papel, me había regalado un precioso cuadro hecho por ella misma y que podéis ver en su blog con fecha del 29 de junio. Me sentía empoderada e inspirada para trabajar.

Some days before, I had made an order from Scrapbookpasion, and I wanted to try some of my new things. Apart from this, I'd watched some videotutorials on Scrapeando con Rocío's YouTube channel, and my friend Antonia, owner of the Cáscara de Papel blog, had made a beautiful layout for me, which she published on her blog on the 29th of June. I was feeling empowered and inspired. 

Elegí una foto del día de mi boda, y como quería un aire romántico y suave, usé papeles de tonos muy claros de las colecciones Nyhavn y Coffee in the Arbour the Maja Design. Esta vez iba a usar solo una foto, así que consulté varios page maps, y acabé decidiéndome por uno en el que sugieren cubrir la mitad del layout con una capa de papel, y los adornos se distribuyen de forma más o menos uniforme por el resto de la composición.

I chose a picture from my wedding photo shoot. I was after a soft, romantic look, so I used delicate patterns from Maja Design's Nyhavn and Coffee in the Arbour collections. I was only going to use one picture, so I checked some page maps and went for one where half of the layout is covered by a second layer, and the ornaments are distributed more or less evenly on the rest of the project.

Este es el resultado final. En lugar de cubrir la mitad de la base con un papel distinto, cubrí un cuarto con papel y el otro cuarto, con una plantilla de TCW. Utilicé acentos amarillos y verdes para coordinarlos con los colores de la fotografía.

This is the final result. Instead of covering half of the page with paper, I only covered one quarter, using a stencil from TCW for the other quarter. I used yellow and green colour accents to match the shades in the picture. 

El stencil es de TCW by Gabrielle Pollacco. Las flores, de Flora Doodles, Dixi Crafts y Paperblooms by Kaisercraft. Los chipboards, con gesso y tinta Distress Ink en Vintage Photo y gotas de Liquid Pearls en Silver Pearl, son de Kora Projects. He descubierto que la tinta acaba cambiando el color del Liquid Pearl, y lo hace doradillo. De todos modos, no me ha gustado mucho cómo quedan estos chipboards. La próxima vez, haré algo distinto con ellos.

The stencil is part of Gabrielle Pollacco's collection for TCW. The flowers are from Flora Doodles, Dixi Crafts and Paperblooms by Kaisercraft. The chipboards, from Kora Projects, have been covered with gesso paste and Distress Ink in Vintage Photo, with small Liquid Pearls in Silver. I've discovered that the ink runs into the liquid pearl, turning the silver into gold. I wasn't very keen on these particular chipboards. I'll do something different with them next time.

Utilicé gasa en la parte inferior para aportar textura. También puse varios sellos en el papel de base.

I used some gauze underneath to add texture. I also stamped a little bit on the base.

Hice un rasgado en este papel, y entinté los bordes para envejecerlo un poco. Hay gotitas de Liquid Pearl, y una flor de Flora Doodles.

I tore the upper layer a little bit, and used Distress Ink to age it. There are some Liquid Pearls on the sides, and a Flora Doodles flower.

El título está recortado de la tira inferior de un papel de la colección Nyhavn que no he utilizado en este layout. Resalté el corazón con Liquid Pearls. La flor es de Dixi Crafts, y la perla adhesiva, del bazar local.

The title was cut from the bottom strip from a different sheet in the Nyhavn collection, which I haven't used in this project. I highlighted the heart using Liquid Pearls. The flower is from Dixi Crafts, and the sticky pearl, from my local bargain store.

Aquí se aprecia un sello que puse sobre el papel de base y la capa superior. Esta está cortada a mano; me hubiera gustado tener una troqueladora de bordes. Otra vez será. La flor, Paper Blooms de Kaisercraft.

You can see another stamp on both papers. The upper layer was cut by hand. I wish I had a die cutter for the edges. Maybe next time! The flower is from Kaisercraft.

Aquí tenemos el detalle del stencil de TCW. Me asusté un poco al principio, porque el papel se arrugó un poco y pensé que iba a quedar fatal, pero cuando se secó, quedó bien. Puse el sello encima pensando que se iba a ver un poco menos. Tengo que hacerme con más colores para los sellos; tanto marroncito acaba cansando un poco.

You can see the TCW stencil in some detail here. I got a little fright at the start because the paper started crumpling and I thought it would look awful, but it was all fine once dry. I stamped on top thinking it would be less obvious. I really should get more colours for stamping! I'm getting a bit tired of so much copper...

Después de terminar este layout, me siento algo más cómoda haciendo scrap. Todavía me queda muchísimo por aprender y mejorar. Hay mucha gente experta en este mundillo, todos con sus blogs y sus cuentas de Instagram, y lo bueno es que se puede aprender muchísimo de todos ellos. Yo acabo de empezar. 

After finishing this layout, I feel more comfortable with scrapbooking. I still have lots to learn and to improve. There are a lot of experts in scrapbooking, all of them running blogs and Instagram accounts, and the good thing is that you can learn a lot from them. I, on the other hand, have just begun.

Reach for the stars

En este post, os enseño un layout que hice poco después de comenzar las vacaciones de verano. Llevaba ya un tiempo queriendo hacer algo con estas fotos: las hice en Parque Europa, en Torrejón de Ardoz, en el mes de marzo o abril y cuando las mandé imprimir, elegí un tamaño reducido con la idea de integrarlas en un layout. Por las mismas fechas, compré en Scrapbookpasion unos papeles de tonos vivos y motivos geométricos, de Teresa Collins (Something Wonderful) y de Kaisercraft (colección Hopscotch), pensando que le irían bien a las fotos. Luego, entre unas cosas y otras, lo dejé todo aparcado hasta que por fin llegaron las vacaciones. 

He descubierto que me resulta más fácil hacer layouts con dos fotos o más. No sé por qué, me parece más sencillo distribuir el peso de la composición y llenar el espacio mejor, sin dejar huecos vacíos que me pueden llegar a parecer algo incómodos. En este layout, he puesto las fotos en diagonal, y he llenado los espacios restantes con una banderola y con una especie de postal en la que cualquiera de mis dos niños explica qué le gusta del otro.

En general, estoy contenta con el resultado. En este, no he distresado ni entintado nada, sólo he recortado y pegado, y he usado muy pocos adornos (algunos adhesivos de Teresa Collins, y el cordel rojo y blanco). No sé muy bien cómo definir este estilo de scrapbooking (¿estilo novato?), pero no creo que repita con colores de este tipo, ni geometrías así, porque no me inspiran mucho y con las habilidades que tengo, me siento incluso más limitada que si opto por un estilo algo más shabby.

Aquí se pueden ver las diferentes capas. Usé botones adhesivos para decorar (descubrí que los agujeritos se podían quitar después de pegarlos, así que para disfrazar esto, los pinté de negro con rotulador), y botones reales para "colgar" el cartel. El letrero "Reach for the stars" está recortado y pegado de otro papel distinto. 

You can see the different layers here. I used sticky buttons to decorate (I only discovered I could have detached the little holes after sticking them, so I used a black marker pen to disguise this), and real buttons to 'hang' the sign. The phrase 'Reach for the stars' was cut from a different sheet and glued to this.

Pegué la foto torcida adrede para dar al layout un poco de dinamismo. Está "colgada" con cordel blanco y rojo, y creo que va bastante bien con los colores del fondo. 

The picture is askew on purpose because I thought it would give the layout a dynamic look. It is 'hanging' using red and white twine, and I think it coordinates well with the background colours.

Esta foto también está inclinada deliberadamente. La pegué a un corte de papel igual que el de la parte inferior, y añadí una banda de cuadros azul y blanca como el recorte en el que se apoya la foto de abajo. No me terminaba de convencer, así que hice cortecitos con la tijera para simular flecos.

This picture is askew deliberately too. I glued it to a cutting of the same paper on the lower part of the layout, and I added a strip of blue and white gingham like the one under the other picture below. I wasn't entirely happy with it, though, so I ended up cutting it horizontally as if it was a tasselled fringe.

Esta es una especie de postal que rellené con rotuladores de colores de los que usan mis hijos. Intenté que la letra fuera algo infantil (sin mucho éxito), y usé los colores del tema. El letrero *Little star* también está recortado y pegado.

This is a journaling card, and I used my kids' marker pens to fill it in. I tried to make my handwriting childlike (rather unsuccessfully, I think) and I used the theme's colours. The lettering, *Little star*, was cut from another sheet and glued on.

I'm going to show you a layout I made shortly after the summer holidays began. I'd been wanting to do something with those pictures for a while- I took them at Parque Europa, in the town of Torrejon de Ardoz (in the Madrid area) back in March or April, and  when I had them printed, I chose a small size to use them in the same layout. Round about the same time, I bought on Scrapbookpasion some bright coloured, geometric printed sheets of paper from Kaisercraft (Hopscotch collection) and Teresa Collins (Something Wonderful), thinking they would suit the pictures. After that, I got too busy and set everything aside until the holidays finally started.

I've discovered that I find it easy to use two or more pictures on layouts. I'm not sure why, I think it's a simple way of spreading the weight of the layout and of filling the space a bit better. I arranged the photographs diagonally, and I filled the remaining space with a banner and a journaling card, where any of my two kids explains what they like about the other one.

I'm fairly pleased with the result. I haven't distressed or inked any of the cuttings- I've just cut and pasted, and I used very few ornaments (some sticky buttons and banners by Teresa Collins, and the red and white twine). I've no idea how to describe this is terms of scrapbooking styles (newbie style?), but I can safely say I don't think I'll use this kind of colours and patterns in a hurry. I didn't find them very inspirational, and given my ability, I feel even more limited than if I attempt something a bit more shabby.

Mi primer layout / My first layout

Sin contar el primerito de todo que hice para ver de qué iba esto del scrapbooking, este que os enseño ahora es el primer layout que hice sola, en febrero de 2017. 

Se nota un montón que es el primero, ya que el resultado final es un poco estático y me sentí algo perdida mientras lo componía. Lo hice cuando apenas tenía material, así que es algo repetitivo y soso, pero lo bueno que tiene es que aprendí bastante haciéndolo y que tampoco está para encerrarlo en un cajón y que no le dé jamás la luz del sol, ¿no? 

La foto es de hace muuuuuuuuuchos años, quizás de 2002, y está hecha en Escocia, cerca de Neidpath Castle (que se aprecia al fondo). Por aquel entonces yo vivía en Edimburgo y solía hacer excursiones por aquí y por allí, y por fortuna conservo bastantes fotos. 

Sin más, la lista de materiales: 

• Papeles de Maja Design, de las colecciones Coffee in the Arbour y Enjoying Outdoors. 
• Flores de Kaisercraft Paper Blooms, Dixi Crafts Flower Stems y Simply Creative Paper Blossoms. 
• Tinta Distress Ink en Vintage Photo (para envejecer el papel)
• Sellos, chipboards, puntilla y perlas adhesivas del bazar local

La composición se concentra en la parte izquierda del papel del fondo, que va a cuadros de manera intencionada (por Escocia, claro está), y que coordina en color con la segunda capa de aspecto como de papel pintado antiguo. Intenté conseguir el aspecto de diferentes capas superponiendo cortes diferentes de papel, y usando diferentes partes de forma coordinada (como la cinta que hay debajo de la foto y el papel de la tercera capa, o la frase "What a beautiful day" que también se lee en la banda inferior del papel del fondo. No se aprecia esto en las fotos). Para envejecer, rasgué el papel al que la foto está pegada y lo entinté, como si los bordes estuvieran quemados, o al menos esa era mi intención.

El resultado me parece algo estático y clara obra de una persona que está dando sus primeros pasos en este mundillo. No me avergüenzo de ella, aunque tampoco estoy orgullosa.

If we ignore the very first one I made as I was finding out what this scrapbooking business is about, this is the first layout I did on my own. This was in February 2017.

It's really obvious it's my first one, as the end result is really static and I remember feeling fairly lost as I was putting it together. When I made it, I owned hardly any material, so it's quite repetitive and even boring, but on the plus side, I learned a lot while I was doing it and it doesn't look bad enough to lock away in a drawer for evermore, right?

The picture was taken looooooooooooong ago, possibly in 2002 (can't remember), near Neidpath Castle in the Scottish Borders. I was living in Edinburgh at the time and used to go on day trips to places nearby. Fortunately, I still have a lot of pictures from back then.

Without further ado, the list of materials used:

• Paper: Maja Design, from two collections: Coffee in the Arbour and Enjoying Outdoors. 
• Flowers: Kaisercraft Paper Blooms, Dixi Crafts Flower Stems and Simply Creative Paper Blossoms. 
• Distress Ink (Vintage Photo)
• Stamps, chipboards, lace and sticky pearls from my local bargain store

The composition concentrates on the left hand side of the paper (a bit heavy, in my opinion). The background is intentionally check (it reminds me of Scottish tartan a bit) and coordinates with the second layer, which looks like old-fashioned wallpaper. I tried to achieve a layered look by superimposing different paper cuttings, and by coordinating them with each other--for example, the ribbon underneath the picture coordinates with the third layer and the phrase "What a beautiful day" coordinates with the tiny lettering at the very bottom of the background paper--which you can't really see in the pictures. In order to achieve a distressed look, I tore some of the paper and used ink to make it look as if it had been scorched. At least, that was my intention.

The result looks static and the obvious work of someone who is taking their first steps in this art. I'm not ashamed of it, but I'm not particularly proud of it either.

¡Hola!

Bienvenidos a Cuadraditos de Colores. Me llamo Maite, soy española y hace poco empecé a hacer scrapbooking. 

No es que tenga mucho tiempo para ello. Trabajo a jornada completa como profesora y tengo dos niños pequeños, así que te podrás imaginar que paso la mayoría de mi tiempo libre... durmiendo. 

Cuando tengo tiempo, sin embargo, me dedico a ello de forma intensiva. Este hobby es muy adictivo, y como los resultados suelen ser muy llamativos, es fácil meterse hasta dentro y dejar la creatividad volar. 

Con este blog, lo que pretendo es simplemente compartir mis humildes trabajos, y documentar los progresos que espero ir haciendo con la práctica. Hay muchos blogs de gente que realiza trabajos excelentes; yo, a día de hoy, no soy una de ellas, pero ¿quién sabe? Quizás algún día llegue a publicar algo tan bueno como ellas.

Hi!

Welcome to Cuadraditos de Colores (Little Squares of Colour in Spanish). My name is Maite, I'm from Spain and I've recently taken up scrapbooking. 

Not that I have a lot of time for it. I'm a full-time teacher and I have two young boys, so you can imagine that most of my spare time is devoted to... sleeping!

When I do have time for it, though, I really go for it. This hobby is highly addictive, and the results are usually so eye catching that it's easy to get into it and to get creative.

What I want to achieve by writing this blog is just sharing my projects, and record how I (hope to) progress as I complete more and more projects. There are a lot of blogs by people who make excellent projects; as I'm typing this, I'm not one of them, but who knows? Maybe one day I'll get to publish something as good as them.
